Here's one of my Corvairs. I bought it in 1991 from a woman in Osage Iowa.(somewhere in the middle of Iowa)
It was well preserved and sitting alone in a red wheat steel barn with a cement floor. It was a Monza 4-speed,
but I addded a Corsa engine, hotter cam, electric fuel pump, solid state ignition ( electronic switch under a
traditional distributor cap) and turned the carburetors ninety degrees. Corvairs otherwise run lean on the
inside and flood the outside carbs in hard corners. It had a gas tank leak so I brought a five gallon gas
can and ran a hose from the back seat to the fuel pump. John Roberts shared the driving and for that he got
the title to my BMW 2002 for the ride home. I had it painted at Quality Auto by Larry Shapiro.
On Christmas morning, 1998, at about 7:00am I found myself going sideways in the ditch alongside County
MM south of Madison about 95mph. I was stopped by a telephone pole just at the front of the driver's door. Larry
and his employee Steve did a really nice repair and a new red finish.
With the vicissitudes of life and many
instances of my car being loaned, the edges were a bit bashed in by November of 2002. Steve has also not sealed
the seam just above the clutch pedal completely and water had destoyed the floor on the left side.
So I dropped it off for new floors and a lot of love in November of 2002. Unfortunately, Larry died in July of 2003
and so his staff had to pick it up from there. These photos were taken on 7 August 2003.
